Adam Gemili 10 Fast Facts, Biography, Wiki

Adam Gemili was born on 6 October 1993 in England.

Gemili is of Moroccan-Iranian descent. He was educated at Dartford Grammar School and then went to University in east London.

Before becoming an athlete, Adam Gemili played on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge for Thurrock and had been on Chelsea’s books as a schoolboy in their youth academy.

However, his career veered towards athletics after winning silver at the European Junior Championships in 2011.

The following year, he won world junior 100m gold and then reached the semi-finals of the London Olympic Games.

In 2013, Adam Gemili ran the second fastest time ever by a Briton over the 200m when he qualified for the 2013 World Championships.

In June 2015 he became the only British athlete to go under 10 seconds for the 100m (running 9.97 seconds) and sub 20 seconds in the 200m, however he ruptured a hamstring which meant he missed the rest of the season.

Nevertheless, Gemili qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Gemili came fourth in the 200 metres at Rio, missing out on a medal by just three thousandths of a second.

Adam Gemili was part of the 4 x 100m gold medal winning Brtish team at the 2017 Athletics World Championships in London.

In 2020, he joined the board of a new independent body the Athletics Association.

In August 2020, Adam Gemili won the men’s 200m with a time of 20.61 seconds at the Diamond League in Stockholm.

He has an A in GCSE Japanese.

Gemili is of Iranian and Moroccan descent, which he considers to be “a very weird background for a sprinter.”

He is the first sprinter of either north African or Middle Eastern descent to break both the 10 second and 20 second barriers for 100 and 200 metres respectively.

At the age of eleven, Gemili attended Dartford Grammar School.

He also attended Barking and Dagenham College where he studied for a BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport, and hoped to attend university at some point.

After the 2012 Olympics he started studying Sports and Exercise Science with Human Biology at the University of East London, where he wrote his dissertation on the effect of particular warm-up exercises on sprinting performance.

He is a member of Blackheath & Bromley Harriers.
