Kumar tied the knot with Twinkle Khanna, the daughter of actors Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia, on January 17, 2001.

They share a son and a daughter as their family.

Kumar’s reputation as a protective father is well-known, and he actively shields his children from the media spotlight.

He has expressed his desire to offer them a “regular childhood.”

During a performance for Levis at Lakme Fashion Week in 2009, Kumar requested Twinkle to unfasten his jeans, causing a controversy that resulted in a police case being filed against them.

Initially, Kumar was a devout follower of Shaiva Hinduism, regularly visiting temples and shrines across India, including the renowned Vaishno Devi Mandir.

However, in March 2020, he declared, “I don’t adhere to any specific religion. My belief lies in being Indian.”

Regarding his citizenship, during or after the 2011 Canadian federal election, the Canadian Conservative government employed an uncommon law to grant Kumar Canadian citizenship.

This law bypassed the usual residency requirement for immigrants.

According to Tony Clement, a former Conservative Party minister, Kumar’s citizenship was awarded in return for his commitment to enhancing Canada-Indian relations in trade, commerce, film, and tourism.

Although Kumar had supported Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Brampton, Ontario, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Windsor, Clement denied any partisan motivation for the citizenship.

In December 2019, Kumar disclosed his application for an Indian passport and his intention to relinquish Canadian citizenship.

On August 15, 2023, on India’s Independence Day, Kumar confirmed the restoration of his Indian citizenship while relinquishing his Canadian citizenship in accordance with Indian law.
