Atiq Ahmed was born in 1962 to a poor family. His father was a horse-cart driver in Allahabad.

Ahmed was married to Shaista Praveen. The couple had five sons. Ahmed’s brother Khalid Azim (alias Ashraf) was also an ex-MLA from the Samajwadi Party.

Atiq Ahmed was an Indian politician. He served as a member of the Indian Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Samajwadi Party.

As of March 2023, the Uttar Pradesh Police had seized properties worth ₹11,684 crore (US$1.5 billion) belonging to Ahmed and his family.

In 2019, he was convicted of kidnapping a witness who testified against him regarding the 2005 murder of his political rival Raju Pal. Ahmed remained in jail until his assassination by gunmen on his way to a court-mandated medical checkup on 15 April 2023.

Atiq Ahmed was a former Indian politician born on August 10, 1962, in Prayagraj, India.

He was a former member of the Indian Parliament and the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Samajwadi Party.

Atiq Ahmed was convicted of kidnapping and also had more than 100 criminal cases registered against him and had been in jail since 2019.

Atiq Ahmed was first accused in a murder case in 1979. He had a long stint both in politics and with the criminal world.

He won his first election as an independent candidate and became a state lawmaker in 1989.

In 2004, he won a seat in the federal election as an SP candidate and became an MP. Ahmed contested a few more elections in the next decade but lost all of them.

On March 28, 2023, the court sentenced Atiq Ahmed and two others to life imprisonment in the kidnapping case.

Reports say Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were being escorted for a medical check-up in handcuffs at the time of the attack.

After the shots were fired on Saturday, April 15, three men who had been posing as journalists quickly surrendered and were taken into custody.

The three suspected assailants had arrived at the site on motorcycles, the police said. They got close to the brothers (Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed) on the pretext of filming them and then shot them in the head at close range.

In the footage, shared widely on social media and TV channels, Ahmed is asked whether he attended his son’s funeral.

His last words to the camera are: “They did not take us, so we did not go.” On Thursday, Atiq Ahmad’s teenage son and another man, who had both been blamed for a recent murder, were killed by police in what was described as a shootout.
