Bommai was born on 28 January 1960 to former Chief Minister S. R. Bommai and Gangamma in Hubli, Mysore State (present-day Karnataka).
Bommai is a graduate Mechanical Engineer from B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology (presently KLE Technological University), and started his career with Tata Motors in Pune.
He is also an agriculturist and industrialist by profession. He is married to Chennamma and has two children.
He belongs to Sadar Lingayat community.
Basavaraj Somappa Bommai is an Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Karnataka.
He had started his politics with Janta Dal but later shifted to Bharatiya Janta Party.
He is currently serving as the Minister of state for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislature of Karnataka.
He is also the in-charge minister of Haveri District.
In past, he had served as Minister for Water resources and Cooperation in the Government of Karnataka.
Basavaraj Bommai comes from a political family. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Karnataka, S. R. Bommai.
A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he started his political journey with Janta Dal and represented Dharwad constituency twice in Karnataka Vidhan Soudha as a Janta Dal MLA and also worked as the Parliament Secretary to Chief Minister.
In 2008, he shifted the side and joined Bharatiya Janta Party.
He won 2008 Karnataka MLA election on a BJP ticket and appointed as the Minister for Water Resources.
He has been serving as the Minister for Cooperation, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs and Minister of Home Affairs, ever since the BJP came again into power in the state before sworn in as the new Chief Minister as B S Yediyurappa stepped down from the post.

He was born in Hubli, Mysore State (present-day Karnataka).

Basavaraj Bommai was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council twice from Dharwad local authorities constituency– first in 1998 and then in 2004.
From 1999-2000, he served as the Political Secretary to former Karnataka Chief Minister JH Patel and was the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative council.
In February 2008, he left Janta Dal (United) and joined Bharatiya Janata Party.
The same year he was elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Shiggaon constituency.
From 2008 to 2013, he served as the Minister of Water Resources in the B.S. Yediyurappa, Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar cabinet.
He is widely known for implementing innumerable irrigation schemes in the Indian State of Karnataka.
He is also credited for implementing India’s first 100% piped irrigation project at Shiggaon in the Haveri district of Karnataka.
In the fourth Yediyurappa ministry, he held several ministerial portfolios such as Home Minister, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, and Cooperations Minister.
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, he imposed stringent lockdown and put forth stern rules for the wanderers.
During the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, he transformed his residence into a Covid Care Centre.
The centre can accommodate 50 patients, thereby reducing the burden on the Shiggaon taluk hospital.
