Porter was born in Wayzata, Minnesota, and lived there until he was 15 years old when his family moved to Duxbury, Massachusetts.

He attended Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts, and Bowdoin College.

He played baseball and hockey for the Bowdoin Polar Bears, and graduated in 2003 with a degree in History.

Porter is cousin to Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.

Porter was married to Katie Burke, daughter of former NHL executive Brian Burke, but the couple divorced in 2014.

Porter interned for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2002 and 2003.

He joined the Boston Red Sox as an intern in 2004, becoming their Director of Professional Scouting in 2012.

He spent two years with the Chicago Cubs also as Director of Professional Scouting, under former Red Sox executive Theo Epstein, where the pair helped assemble the 2016 World Series team before he was hired by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2016-17 offseason as Senior Vice President and Assistant General Manager.
