Kapil Sharma is an Indian stand-up comedian, television presenter, actor and television producer known for hosting The Kapil Sharma Show. He previously hosted the television comedy shows Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil.
Ormax Media rated Sharma the most popular Indian television personality in April 2016. Forbes India ranked him at 11th and 18th in their Celebrity 100 list in the year 2016 and 2017 respectively.
In 2013, he was awarded the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year in the entertainment category, and was ranked third in the Most Admired Indian Personality List by The Economic Times in 2015.
Sharma was nominated in 2014 for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spread awareness among people for cleanliness and other hygiene related social issues.
For his contribution towards the mission through his show, he was invited to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Pranab Mukherjee in September 2015 to acknowledge his contribution.
Kapil came from a lower middle-class family with no entertainment background and had to struggle a lot to get himself roles that are worthy.
During his graduation at Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, he used to direct plays for his pocket money. He was also a scholarship holder and a national-level winner in theatre.
He was paid minimum wages in the initial stages of his career and he even acted as a comedian without being paid at all. He has also worked in a PCO, a cloth mill and even picked crates of soft-drinks to earn money.
His father died in 2004 due to Cancer. He didn’t have the money to join any acting course but due to his sheer talent, many institutions sponsored his acting course fee.

In July 2022, in a conversation with veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, action director Tinu Verma revealed that he ‘slapped’ Kapil Sharma and threw him off the set of the Bollywood film Gadar.
Reportedly, Kapil Sharma had a small role in Sunny Deol‘s Gadar; however, his scene could not make the final cut.
While giving the reason behind this act, Tinu said that during the shoot of a scene for the film, when he asked the crowd to rush in the direction of the train, everyone did so except Kapil who ran in the opposite direction due to which they had to re-shoot the scene, and it angered Tinu.
In October 2022, he revealed that he was once rejected for the singing reality show Indian Idol. While speaking with the judges of Indian Idol on his comedy show, Kapil Sharma said,
I have given ‘Indian Idol’ auditions during one of the seasons. The auditions took place in Amritsar and I was not selected. Then there was this ‘Indian Idol’ copy ‘Awaz Punjab Di’ in our area where I was selected.”
