Mordaunt has been a member of the British Astronomical Association, and as of 2013 was chair of the Wymering Manor Trust in Portsmouth. She ran the League of Friends visiting team at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth for eight years.
She is a patron of the Victoria Cross Trust, and Enable Ability, a disability charity based in Portsmouth, in addition to being a Scouting ambassador in Portsmouth.
Mordaunt met Paul Murray when they were both students at the University of Reading and married him in 1999, but this ended in divorce the following year. She was by 2015 in a long-term relationship with businessman Ian Lyon, a part-time classical singer.
She has lived in Portsmouth all her life. Mordaunt’s hobbies include astronomy, painting, dance and music. She owns four Burmese cats. Following the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine she took a Ukrainian refugee into her home.
In July 2022, Hampshire Police said they were investigating death threats sent to Mordaunt. She strengthened her security after a letter was sent to her constituency office threatening to “shoot her in the head” and “kill her family” if she did not quit as an MP.

Penny Mordaunt’s full name is Penelope Mary Mordaunt.
The British politician who has served as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council was born on 4 March 1973. Member of the Conservative Party, Penny has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth North, a junior minister under Boris Johnson, Secretary of State for Theresa May’s Cabinet of International Development, and also a Secretary of State for Defence from May to July 2019.
Penny Mordaunt was named after the daughter of a former paratrooper, Arethusa-class cruiser HMS Penelope.
Her father, John Mordaunt, served in the Parachute Regiment before retraining as a teacher, and her mother, Jennifer was a special needs teacher at several Purbrook schools.
Sibling of two, Mordaunt completed her early education at Oaklands Roman Catholic Comprehensive School in Waterlooville and later studied drama at the Victoryland Theatre School.
Mordaunt got fascinated with politics during the aftermath of the 1989 revolution. The first member of her family to attend University, Mordaunt was an active member of student politics and also served as president of the Reading University Students’ Union.
She said she took a job as a magician’s assistant to fund her college studies. The job involved her being “sawn in half”, she said.
