Veena was born to Adv. P. E. Kuriakose and Smt. Rosamma Kuriakose in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala.

She did her schooling from Mount Bethany High School Mylapra.

She cleared her boards with an outstanding performance and was also a kalathillakam .

She obtained graduation and postgraduation in Physics from Womens’ college Thiruvananthapuram.

Completed her Masters degree as a university rank holder. Then she pursued her B.Ed from Pathanapuram B Ed College.

After that, she worked as a Physics Lecturer in Christian College, Pathanamthitta .

Later, she studied journalism, as she wanted to be a socialworker and joined Kairali TV as a Journalist Trainee.

Later, she worked as Chief Editor Invarious- Malayalam News channels.

She is married to George Joseph a Higher Secondary Mathematics Teacher and they have two children.

Veena George is the MLA of Aranmula Constituency of Kerala. She belongs to the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

She is widely regarded as one of the best women news journalists in the history of Kerala. Veena George is a post-graduate in Physics.

It is quite interesting that she joined the field of journalism after getting PG in Physics.

She has worked in many Malayalam news channels, including Manorama and TV News.

She has worked with major Malayalam news channels for over 16 years.

She is also the first female executive editor among Malayalam news channels.

In 2019 She contested from Pathanamthitta (Lok Sabha constituency) as Left front candidate (LDF).

However, she lost the election by a margin of 44,243 votes to Anto Antony of Indian National Congress.

In 2016 Veena George was elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly from Aranmula assembly constituency in Kerala Legislative Assembly election, 2016 by defeating Congress veteran K Sivadasan Nair of Indian National Congress by a margin of 7646 votes.

In 2000 She started her career as a trainee journalist at Kairali TV. She left Kairali TV and joined Manorama News as a news anchor.

Later, she joined Indiavision as chief news editor. After that she became Executive Editor in TV New.

For the first time in its history, a woman journalist-turned politician, Veena George, will become a minister in Kerala and latest reports indicate that George is set to replace none other than Kerala’s much-acclaimed ex-Health Minister KK Shailaja.

This is the second time George is elected to Assembly, that too from the same Aranmula seat she was elected for the first time in 2016.

In 2019 however, she failed to make a mark in the election to the lower house of Parliament.

George won with a margin of 19,003 votes this time, whereas in 2016 polls, she had wrested the constituency from the Congress, defeating the nearest rival Sivadasan Nair by a margin of 7,646 votes.

In her journalism career of over one-and-a-half decades in television, George had excelled as a journalist and news anchor in various Malayalam news channels.

She was the first woman executive editor to head a media organisation in Kerala and one of the five Indian journalists who was assigned to cover the 2012 US elections.

She was also the presenter of the television programme Naam Munnottu in which CM Pinarayi Vijayan interacted with a select audience.

A rank holder of MSc (Physics) and BEd, George’s political career began quite unexpectedly as she switched from journalism even though she was an activist of Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the CPI(M) while studying.

George, a mother of two, is a member of the CPI(M) Pathanamthitta area committee.

Her husband Dr George Joseph, a higher secondary school teacher, has served as secretary of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.
